Course Objectives


  1. Identify anatomical structures to avoid needling the sternocleidomastoid and scalene muscles.

  2. List possible adverse events associated with dry needling, including those specific to the trunk region.

  3. Demonstrate different dry needling methods for the psoas major, serratus anterior, rhomboid, middle trapezius, pectoralis, zygomaticus, lateral pterygoid, and intrinsic hand muscles.

  4. Compare and contrast principles of dry needling with trigger point injections, and differences in needling techniques for various muscles.

  5. Perform specific manual therapy treatments to inactivate myofascial trigger points.

  6. Identify key features of a trigger point and relevant characteristics of the Cinderella Hypothesis.

  7. Identify muscles by surface anatomy and function.

  8. Explain differences in needling techniques for cervical and thoracic multifidi muscles.

  9. Discuss trigger point hypotheses, muscle overload forms leading to trigger points, adverse events from needling, and key features of central sensitization.



This streamlined approach ensures practical mastery and theoretical understanding for effective dry needling practice.

Course Instructor


Jan Dommerholt

PT, DPT - President/CEO


Dr. Jan Dommerholt is co-founder and president/CEO of Myopain Seminars. His early career mentors included Drs. Janet Travell, David Simons, Robert Gerwin, Richard S. Materson, Karel Lewit, and Peter Baldry, among others. Together with Robert Gerwin, Jan started teaching dry needling courses in 1996, first in Spain and, from 1997 onwards, also in the USA and countless other countries.


Dr. Dommerholt is a recognized expert in the physical therapy diagnosis and treatment of persons with myofascial pain syndrome, chronic pain syndromes, and whiplash-associated disorders.


He has published several books, over 140 articles, and nearly 80 chapters in medical and physical therapy textbooks on myofascial pain, chronic pain conditions, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, and whiplash. Dr. Dommerholt had prepared a quarterly literature review column on myofascial pain syndrome for the Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain for 17 years, and later for the Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies.
